Slight recovery for Toronto

The S&P TSX Composite eked out gains at the opening bell Thursday, mirroring a modest rebound in commodity prices, after plunging almost 2% in the previous session.

The S&P TSX Composite Index began Thursday up 4.10 points to 11,575.81

The Canadian dollar slumped 0.01 cents to 95.37 U.S. cents.

Stocks to watch this morning include Goldcorp Inc, which said on Wednesday it has entered into a $2-billion credit facility with a syndicate of 15 lenders which will be used to fund growth opportunities and for general corporate purposes.

Mosaid Technologies Inc. posted a second-quarter loss and suspended its dividend payment for the quarter. Mosaid said it incurred a one-time expenses of $4.2 million in the quarter related to a special committee for the sale review.

Sherritt International Corp. announced it had named David Pathe its president and chief executive, replacing the retiring CEO Ian Delaney.

On the economic front, Statistics Canada came out this morning with not so exciting news: average non-farm weekly earnings slid 0.3% to $872.75 in September, after an increase in August.

On a year-over-year basis, average weekly earnings rose 1.1%, the smallest increase since November 2009

The TSX Venture Exchange sliced off 0.92 points to 1,521.23, while the Nasdaq Canada index faded 12.57 points to 374.20.

Nine of the 14 Toronto subgroups began the day in positive territory, with metals and mining growing 1%, while global base metals and energy gained 0.4%.

The five laggards were weighed by health-care, off 0.3%, real-estate issues, down 0.2%, and telecoms, inching lower by 0.02%.

Markets are closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Dow Jones Industrials ended Wednesday down 236.17 points, or 1.7%, to close a short week at 11,257.50.

The S&P 500 dipped 26.25 points, to 1,161.79, while the Nasdaq Composite staggered 61.20 points to 2,460.08.
