Governments have always been concerned with balancing the free flow of goods and people - as they travel from place to place – with the need for security from those who would wish harm to all concerned. Obviously, this was a need reinforced by the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the bombings in London after that city was awarded the 2012 Olympics.
Those companies who can balance these competing needs are the ones that will prosper in the medium to long term. One is Edmonton-based United Protection Security Group, Inc. (TSX-Venture:UZZ). United specializes in high-impact, high-visibility, and high-risk security situations coupled with one of the broadest ranges of services in the industry.
Focusing its energies on securing points in Western Canada, the company has grown from a small outfit to more than 800 employees working out of 12 branches. UZZ has also gone the acquisition route, culminating in 17 acquisitions in 17 years.
United was in the news in mid-May with the announcement of a multi-million-dollar contract, set to kick in with the start of June, to provide security at both Edmonton International and City Centre airports. United will provide security services for the EA terminal, parking facilities, key access points and some airside patrols and will secure the Edmonton City Centre Airport. The deal extends for three years with a two-year option.
Also during May, UZZ signed a deal with Devon Energy Canada Corporation to provide security services for the latter firm’s Jackfish 2 project (located just outside the Alberta town of Conklin) throughout its construction. The $1.3-million contract should extend out to about two years. It brings United’s total to more than 20 such contracts with major companies related to the oil, gas, petro chemical and pipeline industries and continues to be a major provider in Western Canada of industrial security services.
In April, United was named as part of a consortium to help provide security to the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010.
Obviously, this is a company that has done well by not standing still, ever improving its customer base and, with it, its bottom line. The stock is in the middle of a 52-week trading range extending up to 41 cents late last May, sinking to a mere six cents last November. The price was around the 19-cent mark the day after the airport announcement.
