FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) stock was up 0.29% at the bottom of the noon hour on February 28. Shares of FedEx have stayed in the green even as the company has been thrust into the fierce debate over gun control in the United States.
In the aftermath of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, some of the survivors have emerged as advocates for gun control in an apparent effort to prevent future shootings. Activists have launched a targeted campaign against the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the numerous companies that are partnered with it. A celebrity-championed boycott has been organized for Thursday, March 1, that is targeting FedEx, Amazon.com, Inc., and Apple Inc.
FedEx appeared to hold firm in the company’s first public comments on Monday, February 26. The company stated that it “never set or changed rates for any of our millions of customers around the world in response to their politics, beliefs or positions on issues.” FedEx stated that its views on firearms differ from the NRA, but that it is one of hundreds of organizations in its alliance programs. The company went on to say that assault rifles and large capacity magazines are “an inherent danger to schools, workplaces, and communities” and advocated for more restrictions.
FedEx stock has inched up 0.06% in 2018 thus far. It is worth monitoring this development as it progresses. The 24-hour boycott of FedEx, Amazon, and Apple will also be an interesting litmus test going forward.
