A day after Toyota announced that it is recalling more than 7,000 vehicles in Canada due to a potential fire risk; the Ford Motor Company issued a Canadian recall for 340,000 of its popular F-150 pickup trucks due to a seatbelt fire risk.
In total, Ford said that it is recalling two million F-150 pickup trucks worldwide from the last four model years (2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018) in order to fix an issue with the vehicle’s front seatbelt pretensioners, which tighten the seatbelt when the vehicle detects a collision.
The Detroit-based car manufacturer said that it has received 17 reports of smoke or fire in F-150 trucks in the U.S., and six similar incidents in Canada stemming from pretensioners in the front driver and passenger seats. Ford said some pretensioners generate sparks when they deploy, and those sparks ignite gases that can burn the truck’s insulation and carpet.
Customers who think their vehicle is affected are instructed to contact their dealer. The recall number is "18S27." All repairs will be provided at no cost, Ford said in a statement.
