In Q4, R&D expenses increased over the prior-year quarter, primarily due to an $820-million impairment charge related to in-process R&D (IPR&D) for the KITE-585 program (an anti-BCMA being evaluated for the treatment of multiple myeloma), up-front collaboration expenses and higher investments to support the growth of Gilead’s business following the acquisition of Kite, partially offset by Gilead’s purchase of Cell Design Labs, Inc. in 2017.
