Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F) has announced that it is recalling 1.5 million pick-up trucks in North America – including 221,000 in Canada – because the transmissions can downshift into first gear on their own while the vehicles are moving.
The recall covers F-150 trucks made between 2011 and 2013 that have six-speed automatic transmissions. The company says there's a glitch in the trucks that sends a signal from the transmission speed sensor. Ford said in a news release that it has received five reports of accidents with the trucks, including one that caused a whiplash injury from a sudden downshift.
Owners of the F-150 trucks will be notified by letter starting on March 4th, said Ford. Dealers will update the power-train control software to fix the problem. Ford's F-Series pick-up truck is the top selling vehicle in both Canada and United States.
Ford has also issued several recalls for smaller issues on 2017 through 2019 Lincoln Continentals, as well as Ford Mustangs, Lincoln Nautiluses and Lincoln Navigators from the 2019 model year.
