Marijuana producer Canopy Growth Corp. (TSX:WEED) is partnering with another celebrity to sell its products.
The Smiths Falls, Ontario based company has announced that Canadian film star and vocal marijuana advocate Seth Rogen is partnering with them to launch a Toronto-based Canadian cannabis brand called "Houseplant."
The Vancouver-born actor, who has starred in films such as "Knocked Up" and "Pineapple Express," co-founded the Toronto-based company along with his longtime friend, screenwriter Evan Goldberg.
"We have been working on this quietly for years and seeing everything come together is a dream come true," Rogen said in an email statement.
"We could not be more passionate about this company and are dedicated to doing everything the right way. It is extremely important to us to treat cannabis with the reverence it deserves. What a time!"
Canopy Growth has acquired 25% of the Houseplant business, and invested working capital, but would not disclose further financial information about the deal. Rogen and Goldberg are the heads of the new Houseplant branded company. Canopy Growth is playing the role of "venture partner" and is providing the facilities, expertise and infrastructure to grow cannabis.
Rogen is the second celebrity to announce a partnership with Canopy Growth in recent weeks. Lifestyle guru Martha Stewart announced earlier this month that she is working with Canopy Growth on a line of cannabis products. And rapper Snoop Dogg also has deal with Canopy Growth to grant the licensed producer the exclusive right to use certain content and brands such as "Leafs By Snoop."
Other celebrities involved with marijuana companies include Tommy Chong, one half of the Cheech & Chong comedy duo, who has a line of medicinal cannabis products called "Chong’s Choice," and director Kevin Smith and actor Jason Mewes — better known as their stoner movie characters Jay and Silent Bob — have a brand licensing agreement with Hamilton, Ontario-based cannabis company Beleave Inc.
