Will people in Thailand buy double doubles?
Tim Hortons, the venerable Canadian doughnut and coffee chain, aims to find out as it prepares to open its first coffee shop in Thailand.
Tim Hortons, which sells coffee with names such as “double double” to denote two sugars and two creams, said in a news release that it has signed an agreement with the WeEat Company to develop its brand throughout the Southeast Asian country of Thailand.
The chain operates more than 4,800 locations, mostly in Canada and the U.S. It also has restaurants in Mexico, the U.K., Spain, the Philippines and China.
Its parent company, Restaurant Brands International (TSX:QSR), has announced a major expansion with plans to grow Tim Hortons, Burger King and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen to more than 40,000 locations worldwide within the next decade.
Tim Hortons did not provide details on when the first Thai location will open or how many coffee shops it plans to operate in the country.
Tim Hortons President Alex Macedo, said in the statement that Thailand has a thriving coffee market. The company plans to create some localized food products to add to the Thai menu but will also feature Canadian branding and food items that are popular in Canada.
Tim Hortons followed a similar strategy when it expanded into China.
