Buffett Boosts Stake in Amazon

Legendary investor Warren Buffett’s holding company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRK.A) has increased its stake in Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) by 11% in the second quarter to a value of more than $1 billion U.S., according to a regulatory filing. The investment, originally made by one of Buffett’s investing deputies, showed how Berkshire’s view on technology companies has shifted in recent years.

Berkshire Hathaway’s Amazon stake remains far smaller than its investment in Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), which totaled more than $49 billion U.S. at the end of the second quarter with no change in shares held.

The banking industry also continues to be a favorite investment of Berkshire Hathaway. The company boosted its bet on U.S. Bancorp by 2.4% to a stake valued at $6.9 billion U.S. as of June 30. Buffett’s company has also been piling into JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) and expanding its investment in Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC)over the past year.

Shares that Berkshire Hathaway sold in recent months include Charter Communications Inc. Berkshire lessened its stake in Charter Communications by 5% in the second quarter, leaving the value of its holding at $2.1 billion U.S. The cable company’s shares gained 14% during the quarter.
