Marvel superhero film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” topped the North American box office for a third straight weekend as few new movies were released by competing studios.
The Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) produced picture took in $21.7 million U.S. in sales at American and Canadian theatres, according to researcher Comscore. That missed forecasts of $23 million U.S. in ticket receipts. So far, the movie has generated $320.6 million U.S. in global ticket sales, making it one of the biggest hits of the year.
"Cry Macho," a Warner Bros. film directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, was released on both HBO Max and in theaters this past weekend. It brought in $4.5 million U.S., while "Copshop," a movie about a con man starring Gerard Butler, generated $2.3 million U.S. in sales.
The movie business is still struggling with the global pandemic. Studios are putting out fewer movies than they did before the crisis: Friday-to-Sunday domestic sales for the top 10 films fell 23% from the previous weekend, narrower than the 30% decline forecasted.
Cinemas will have to wait until October 8 for a major jump in ticket sales when the new James Bond film titled "No Time to Die" from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer hits theatres after multiple delays due to COVID-19.
