Drug stocks selling Covid vaccines will have steady revenue from booster shot sales. The Delta variant necessitated the need for the jab. Omicron’s infectiousness could frighten countries to impose the booster.
J&J (JNJ), Pfizer (PFE), AstraZeneca (AZN), Moderna (MRNA), and BioNTech (BNTX) are the main vaccine stocks to consider. Omicron is a catalyst for vaccine sales. South Africa’s superior detection for the strain alerted the world to its rate of spread. Scientists reported that the virus has over 30 mutations on the spike protein. Since the virus must trade-off its infectiousness with its fatality rate, the latter should matter more.
Health officials are reacting to the infection rate and overlooking the initially reported lower mortality rate. Instead of increasing restrictions, countries are better off with booster shots. After six months, the vaccine efficacy dropped by around 18% (3% per month). Populations are more vulnerable to any variant, so a booster should increase protection from Delta and Omicron.
The risks of side effects for all approved vaccines are lower than the benefits of vaccination. This will give vaccine drug stocks a strong lift in the coming months. Pfizer (PFE), BioNTech, and Moderna are most attractive at current levels.
