Canadian automotive sales totaled 1.64 million in 2021, up 6.6% from the previous year, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.
However, despite the full year increase, sales fell 4.5% to 102,919 units in December from a year earlier as semiconductor shortages and supply issues continued to impact Canada’s automotive industry.
Last year was the 11th best on record but was down 19.6% from the market high of just over two million vehicles sold in Canada during 2017.
Light truck sales accounted for more than 80% of total sales for the first time, rising to 81.2% in 2021, up from 79.9% in 2020.
The top-selling truck in Canada during 2021 was the Ford (F) F-series with 116,401 units sold.
The Honda (HMC) Civic was the top-selling passenger car in Canada during 2021 at 43,556 units while total car sales fell slightly to 308,169 units.
Ford led automotive sales in Canada with more than 243,000 units sold last year, followed by General Motors (GM) at about 217,000 and Toyota (TM) at 199,000.
