Ottawa Recommends Sale Of Shaw’s Wireless Unit As Part Of Rogers Takeover

A House of Commons committee is recommending that Shaw Communications (SJR) sell its wireless unit as a condition of Rogers Communications (RCI) planned takeover of the company.

A report from the industry and technology committee due to be tabled today (February 28) calls on the industry minister to reject the planned merger if Rogers doesn’t agree to sell Shaw’s wireless business, which includes Freedom Mobile.

The news was first reported over the weekend by The Globe and Mail newspaper.

The committee’s report is not binding but could influence Ottawa’s final decision on Rogers’ takeover of Shaw Communications.

The industry minister’s office has said that it will carefully consider the House of Commons committee’s analysis, recommendations, and findings related to the proposed takeover.
