U.S. pharmaceutical company Moderna (MRNA) is sending to Canada 12 million additional
doses of its COVID-19 booster shot that targets the Omicron variant of the respiratory disease.
The Boston-based company said in a news release that the Government of Canada exercised
an option to purchase 4.5 million doses of its most up-to-date vaccine, and that the delivery of
an additional 1.5 million doses will be accelerated to this year rather than 2023.
In all, Moderna plans to send 12 million doses of its COVID-19 booster shot to Canada through
the rest of this year and next, the company said.
Moderna said its updated vaccine provides better protection and lasts longer than previous
versions of its COVID-19 shot.
While demand for vaccines has slowed in recent months, governments around the world are
now moving to bolster supplies ahead of the fall and winter flu season.
Moderna’s stock is down 39% year-to-date and trading at $142.47 U.S. per share.
