Twitter plans to charge users $8 U.S. a month to have their account verified as being legitimate,
according to Elon Musk who now owns the social media platform.
The $8 U.S. charge applies to the premium version of Twitter, called “Blue,” and will include a
verified check mark for paying users’ accounts.
Musk, who bought Twitter for $44 billion U.S., said paying premium users will also be given
priority in replies, mentions and Twitter searches, and that their accounts will receive half as
many advertisements.
Musk has criticized Twitter’s current verification system, which applies a check mark to users
and brands that may be at risk of getting impersonated.
Currently, verified users don’t pay anything for their authentication badges. Media reports have
stated that Twitter users who don’t pay going forward will lose their current verification check
mark.
The premium Twitter Blue tier existed before Musk bought the company. It costs $4.99 U.S. a
month, and allows people to edit their tweets, bookmark folders, and change Twitter’s display
and design features related to their account.
Musk is taking Twitter private following his purchase of the social media company.
