Sobeys Grocery Chain Hit By Computer Problems

Empire Co. (EMP.A), which owns the Sobeys grocery store chain, says it is experiencing
widespread computer problems that are making it difficult for customers to get their
prescriptions filled at instore pharmacies.

Empire, which is based in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, issued a written statement confirming that an
“IT systems issue” is negatively impacting pharmacies located within its Sobeys stores.

The computer problems have been ongoing since last weekend, with consumers reporting that
they have been unable to get prescriptions filled at Empire-owned pharmacies such as
Lawtons Drugs.

At some pharmacies, customers are being forced to pay out of pocket for their prescription
drugs rather than charging the cost directly to their insurer.

Empire said in its statement that it is making progress in resolving the computer problem but
has not said when it expects the issue to be resolved.

Empire operates 1,500 retail stores across Canada and has annual sales of $30.5 billion. The
company’s retail banners include IGA, Safeway, Sobeys, Lawtons Drugs, Foodland, FreshCo,
Needs, and Thrifty Foods, among others.

Empire’s stock is down 9% this year at $35.12 per share.
