Workers At Loblaw Distribution Centre Accept New Labour Pact

Unionized workers at a Loblaw (L) distribution centre in Calgary, Alberta have accepted a new labour contract, averting a work stoppage.

Teamsters Local Union 987 said 66% of its members who work at the Calgary Freeport Facility voted in favour of Loblaw’s latest contract offer.

The union vote came hours before management had planned to lockout the workers at the distribution centre.

Loblaw issued a written statement saying it is pleased with the result and that it was able to avoid a work stoppage in Calgary.

The workers, whose previous contract expired in June, had twice rejected previous offers from Loblaw. The Teamsters union had said that while the company offered a strong wage increase, workers were looking for more guarantees around shift scheduling and seniority.

Loblaw’s stock is up 18% this year and trading at $121.32 per share.
