Alphabet chief executive officer (CEO) Sundar Pichai received $226 million U.S. in total compensation in 2022, most of which came from stock awards.
Alphabet, which is the parent company of search engine Google, paid Pichai $218 million U.S. in stock grants. His actual salary was $2 million U.S., the same level it has been since 2020, according to a regulatory filing.
Pichai’s compensation also included nearly $6 million U.S. for personal security.
Other Alphabet and Google executives earned between $22 million U.S. and $35 million U.S. in annual stock awards last year, according to the securities filing.
News of Pichai’s compensation comes as Alphabet undertakes company-wide cost cutting initiatives that have included 12,000 layoffs.
Google announced earlier in April that the company would be cutting back on items such as employee laptops to further reduce costs.
Alphabet’s stock has fallen 15% in the past year to trade at $105.41 U.S. per share.
