The federal government in Ottawa has appointed Mario Péloquin as the new president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Via Rail Canada.
Péloquin will begin his tenure as Via Rail CEO on June 12 of this year. His appointment is for a five-year term at the Crown corporation.
Péloquin replaces Martin Landry, who had been serving as interim CEO since May 2022 after previous president and CEO Cynthia Garneau resigned following three years in the role.
Péloquin previously served as the chief operating officer (COO) of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority and as senior vice-president at SNC-Lavalin Group (SNC).
Crown corporations are effectively state-owned enterprises. They are wholly owned by the federal government in Ottawa and their leaders are political appointees.
Via Rail is mandated to operate intercity passenger rail service in Canada, primarily along a corridor that runs from Quebec City to Windsor, Ontario.
