General Motors Invests $280 Million To Upgrade Oshawa Plant

U.S. automotive giant General Motors (GM) is spending $280 million to upgrade its Oshawa, Ontario manufacturing plant so that it can produce new gasoline-powered pick-up trucks.

The Detroit-based automaker said in a news release that the Oshawa plant remains important to its overall truck production, though it did not provide details on which new trucks will be made in Ontario or the timing of their manufacturing.

General Motors spent $1.2 billion to reopen production at the Oshawa assembly plant in 2021 after shutting it down in 2019.

Unifor, the union that represents about 3,000 workers at the Oshawa facility, welcomed the latest announcement from General Motors.

The company said that, since it reopened, production in Oshawa has increased to three shifts and the plant now operates 24-hours a day.

General Motors’ stock has declined 8% over the last 12 months to trade at $35.24 U.S. per share.
