Meta Platforms (META) has begun tracking the way employees work, including their keystrokes and mouse clicks, in order to train its artificial intelligence (A.I.) models.
The technology giant, which owns social media platforms Instagram and Facebook, has installed a new tool on its computers and internal apps that records their activity.
The data that is collected will be used to train A.I. technologies that are expected to eventually replace human workers.
Meta workers who spoke to the media expressed concerns, saying having their smallest actions on a computer used to train A.I. models amid ongoing job cuts at the company feels “dystopian.”
Meta Platforms has laid off 2,000 employees this year in several rounds of job cuts, but employees expect more losses in coming months.
The company has also enacted a widespread hiring freeze as it looks to take on fewer human employees.
The new employee tracking tool is called the “Model Capability Initiative.”
Meta Platforms plans to spend $140 billion U.S. on A.I. this year, almost double the amount it invested in the technology during 2025.
META stock has risen 34% over the last 12 months to trade at $668.84 U.S. per share.
