OpenAI’s ChatGPT app now has one billion monthly users around the world.
The ChatGPT app reached the one billion level 3.5 years after its 2022 launch, making it the fastest app ever to reach that milestone, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
The previous record was set by Google Maps, which took five years after its launch to reach the one billion user level.
Other artificial intelligence (A.I.) apps are also seeing rapid growth, with Anthropic’s Claude app posting triple-digit year-over-year percentage gains in May.
OpenAI said in February of this year that ChatGPT had more than 900 million weekly active users across its web and mobile platforms.
Other top A.I. apps, according to Sensor Tower, include Google’s (GOOGL) Gemini, ByteDance’s Doubao, and Anthropic’s Claude.
Even Meta Platform’s A.I. app is seeing huge growth, posting a year-over-year increase of 973% in May.
A.I. app usage continues to soar despite reports of a growing backlash against the technology, with consumers worried that it is replacing human jobs.
Even Pope Leo recently warned of widening inequality and public safety concerns caused by the world’s growing use and adoption of A.I.
Analysts say that, despite people’s complaints, A.I. is here to stay and usage among people is only likely to grow moving forward as the technology infiltrates everyday life.
News that ChatGPT’s app users surpassed one billion per month comes as OpenAI prepares to go public later this year at a valuation that could reach $1 trillion U.S.
