Meta Platforms’ (META) Hyperion data centre in Louisiana is likely to cost as much as $50 billion U.S. to construct and bring online.
The artificial intelligence (A.I.) data centre’s costs are growing as Meta expands its scope and operations.
The company said in a blog post that the site in Louisiana will now be its largest data centre in the world, with capacity for five gigawatts (5GW) of power.
As such, the data centre is likely to cost up to $50 billion U.S., nearly double the initial estimate of $27 billion U.S. revealed last October.
The Louisiana facility was originally planned as a 2GW data centre.
Much of the additional cost will be supported by tax rebates and energy deals being offered by the state government in Louisiana.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has signed into law a 20-year sales tax exemption for data centres built before 2029 as part of an effort to court Meta.
Meta is expanding the project as it seeks to build enough A.I. infrastructure to meet soaring global demand.
The technology giant known for its social media platforms Facebook and Instagram recently announced plans to build a $9 billion U.S. data centre in Alberta outside of Edmonton.
META stock has declined 7% in the last 12 months to trade at $669.21 U.S. per share.
