Meta Platforms (META) has launched a new open-weight artificial intelligence (A.I.) model as it looks to better compete against U.S. and Chinese technology rivals.
The new A.I. model, called “Muse Glimmer,” is smaller than competing products and is designed for agentic tasks that run on a Mac or PC computer with a single graphics card.
Meta said that the new A.I. model is designed for systems that run directly on people’s devices.
Importantly, Meta’s newest A.I. model is open source, or open weight, allowing it to better compete against similar applications from Chinese technology firms.
Open weight refers to artificial intelligence models that are released publicly for anyone to download and use.
Such models are typically cheaper than leading models from so-called frontier labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic that keep their A.I. products closed and charge money to access them.
