Electric vehicle maker Tesla (TSLA) is set to hold an event for its self-driving Cybercab in Austin, Texas on Sept. 3.
Exact details of the event are being kept under wraps by the company, but it arrives as questions swirl around the regulatory hurdles and safety issues the technology is grappling with.
The Cybercab was unveiled by Tesla two years ago and is the company’s first full self-driving vehicle to be offered for sale to the public, subject to regulatory approvals.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that the Cybercab will eventually be available to the public at a cost of about $30,000 U.S.
Musk ?has described the self-driving Cybercab as critical to Tesla's future. The Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle that contains no steering wheel or pedals.
Tesla has developed the Cybercab alongside its fleet of self-driving Robotaxis that are designed to give taxi rides to the public in cities around the U.S.
The company reportedly began producing some Cybercab vehicles earlier this year and has been testing them on public roads in and around its home market of Austin, Texas.
Tesla has not yet received regulatory approval to operate its Cybercabs on public roads.
The company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology found in its standard electric vehicles has faced multiple government investigations and lawsuits following crashes and traffic violations.
TSLA stock has declined 19% this year to trade at $356.09 U.S. per share.
