Apple Unveils Foldable iPhone To Mixed Reactions

Consumer electronics giant Apple (AAPL) has unveiled its first foldable smartphone, called the “iPhone Duo,” to mixed reactions from consumers and investors.

The widely expected foldable phone was unveiled at Apple’s annual September launch event along with updated versions of the Apple Watch and AirPods.

Apple’s new CEO John Ternus said the folding iPhone Duo is about the size of a passport document and will have a starting price of $1,999 U.S.

The newest iPhone, which Ternus said represents the biggest change in the device’s history, will go on sale Oct. 23 of this year.

The outer display of the Duo represents 90% of the screen area of a more conventional iPhone, while the inner display measures 7.6-inches.

The iPhone Duo will use a fingerprint sensor built into the side button for unlocking. And its case is made out of very durable titanium, according to Apple.

The company also said that it has redesigned much of its iOS operating system to take advantage of the two screens, moving buttons and other controls.

Users of the Duo can multitask with two apps open at the same time and can use Apple’s stylus called “Pencil” to operate the phone.

While the iPhone Duo was the centrepiece of the Apple launch event, immediate reactions to the device have been mixed.

Apple’s stock declined slightly during Ternus’ presentation, suggesting that investors weren’t overly impressed with the foldable iPhone.

Some Wall Street analysts questioned the price tag of nearly $2,000 U.S., saying it is likely to be prohibitively expensive for some consumers.

Online, some people said they liked the design of the iPhone Duo while others complained that it looks small compared to other foldable smartphones on the market today.

AAPL stock has gained 39% over the past 12 months to trade at $315.34 U.S. per share.
