Anthropic Reports $80 Billion Loss Ahead Of IPO

Artificial intelligence (A.I.) startup company Anthropic has reported an $80.7 billion U.S. net loss for this year’s first half.

The hefty loss was announced weeks before Anthropic is expected to hold its initial public offering (IPO) on Wall Street.

The company had been seeking a valuation of $2 trillion U.S., which would make it the biggest IPO in history.

However, analysts say that the company’s valuation is likely to be pegged at $1.5 trillion U.S. or lower following its latest financial disclosure.

Anthropic blamed the net loss of $80.7 billion U.S. on a rise in the fair value of its bonds that were converted into shares.

The San Francisco-based company is expected to go public in November in what’s expected to be the biggest IPO of the year.

Anthropic’s first-half loss this year rose more than sixfold from a loss of $13 billion U.S. in the first half of 2025.

The big loss has raised eyebrows on Wall Street, with some analysts saying the disclosure shows the big costs associated with the A.I. race.

Anthropic has committed to spend at least $518 billion U.S. over the next decade on cloud computing services and A.I. infrastructure such as data centers.

The company spent nearly $9 billion U.S. in capital expenditures in this year’s first half, up from $2.3 billion U.S. in the first six months of 2025.

Anthropic recently disclosed that its revenue in this year’s third quarter rose 45% to $16.8 billion U.S. from the previous quarter.

A poor reception of Anthropic’s IPO could weigh on other A.I. stocks and the entire market, warn some analysts.

Anthropic has benefited from the popularity of Claude Code, its coding assistant that software developers use, as well as partnerships with technology giants such as Amazon (AMZN) and Nvidia (NVDA).

Anthropic’s IPO is widely expected to occur before year’s end.
