Apple’s Foldable iPhone Goes On Sale

Apple's new foldable iPhone, called the ‘Duo,’ goes on sale worldwide Oct. 23 with a price tag of $2,000 U.S.

The Duo is available in Apple’s retail stores around the world, from London and Berlin to New York and Toronto.

The company is calling the foldable device the biggest change to the iPhone since its launch back in 2007. However, Apple is also warning that quantities of the device are scarce.

Online sales of the foldable phone sold out in minutes and Apple said in recent days that the Duo is likely to be in short supply for the remainder of this year and heading into 2027.

Apple recently pushed out delivery dates for the Duo to late January 2027, saying that consumer response to the device has been “nothing short of extraordinary.”

Analysts say the Duo is a test of whether Apple can reinvent the iPhone and boost the market for foldable phones. Similar devices from other companies failed to catch on with consumers.

The iPhone Duo is the first big product launch for Apple's new CEO John Ternus, who took the helm of the company this September from Tim Cook.

Early reviews have praised the Duo's design as well as its sturdy and barely visible hinge, a major feat for phones whose creased screens have long been seen as a negative.

But reviews have also criticized the Duo’s camera, noting the lack of a telephoto lens. Critics also say the Duo is less handy for the quick tasks and liken the device more to a tablet.

Analysts have also raised concerns about the iPhone Duo’s hefty price tag of $2,000 U.S., saying it will be hard to afford for many consumers.

Market research firm IDC forecasts that Apple will have 44% of the global foldable smartphone market by the end of this year and become the market leader in 2027.

AAPL stock has gained 34% over the past 12 months and is currently trading at $348.22 U.S. per share, near an all-time high.

Apple’s market capitalization recently surpassed $5 trillion U.S.
