The rich and powerful have been hacked!
The Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) accounts of prominent U.S. political and business leaders such as Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett were hacked in an effort to promote a Bitcoin scam.
The attacks were shocking in their level of coordination. Other Twitter accounts that were caught up in the security incident included Elon Musk, Michael Bloomberg, Uber Technologies Inc. and Apple Inc. The hacked accounts sent out tweets promising to double the money of anyone who sent funds via Bitcoin within 30 minutes.
As the hack unfolded, verified Twitter accounts suddenly lost the ability to post new tweets. Shares of Twitter fell 6% in pre-market trading in New York Thursday because of the hack.
Within hours, Twitter said that access had been restored for most accounts and later added that the hack had targeted employees with access to internal systems and tools, which were then used to take control of high-profile accounts.
