Threads, the new social media site from Meta Platforms (META) that competes against Twitter, has surpassed 100 million users in only five days, growing at a faster clip than artificial intelligence (A.I.) sensation ChatGPT.
According to data from industry analyst Quiver Quantitative, Threads, which is integrated with Meta Platforms’ Instagram social media site, passed the 100 million user mark less than a week after it was launched.
The growth of Threads is beating that of ChatGPT, the popular chatbot launched last November that hit the 100 million user mark after two months.
Threads success is due, in large part, to its connection with Instagram. The Twitter rival is a companion to the photo-sharing app and users can quickly and easily link their Instagram profile to their Threads account.
Instagram currently has more than two billion active users worldwide, giving Threads an enormous installed base.
Threads has also launched as Twitter struggles with declining users and advertisers after the social media platform was bought by Elon Musk for $44 billion U.S. and taken private last fall.
Twitter recently restricted the number of tweets users can see and prevented unregistered users from seeing tweets at all as it tries to push people to become paid members of the site.
However, those moves have alienated Twitter users, many of whom are now moving over to Threads in droves.
Meta Platforms’ stock has increased 78% over the last 12 months to trade at $290.53 U.S. per share.
