The head of Amazon’s (AMZN) artificial general intelligence laboratory has resigned less than two years after joining the technology giant.
David Luan announced his departure on social media, saying he will exit at the end of February and that he plans to “to cook up something new.” No further details were provided.
Luan had joined Amazon after his previous artificial intelligence (A.I.) start-up called Adept was acquired by the e-commerce company.
Amazon announced in December 2024 that Luan would oversee its newly created A.I. laboratory that is based in San Francisco, California.
The Amazon lab is focused on long-term research and developing what the company calls “useful A.I. agents.”
Last year, the lab released Amazon’s Nova Act agent, an extension of its Nova A.I. model that aims to compete against leading A.I. models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
Luan’s departure comes after Amazon announced a major reorganization of its artificial general intelligence division last year.
Artificial general intelligence refers to A.I. that can perform as well or better than humans on most tasks.
Amazon has not commented publicly on Luan’s departure from the company.
AMZN stock is down 2% over the past 12 months and trading at $208.56 U.S. per share.
