Air Canada (AC) has introduced new facial recognition technology that enables customers to confirm their identity.

The Montreal-based airline said it is trialing the facial recognition technology with customers flying between Vancouver and Winnipeg, and that the system has also been installed at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.

Customers in Vancouver and Toronto are being invited to use the facial recognition technology and provided with instructions on how to create a “digital faceprint.”

Air Canada is emphasizing that facial recognition technology is a voluntary option, and pointing out that Canadians already use biologic identifiers such as their fingerprint to unlock their cell phones.

Air Canada passengers can still use their boarding pass and government issued photo identification to board flights, the airline said.

Air Canada’s stock is down 20% over the past 12 months and trading at $20.32 per share.
