The Conservative Party of Canada is proposing to suspend the goods and services tax (GST) for retailers during the month of December to help Canadians save money and spur business activity.
Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole proposed the so called "tax holiday" when announcing his party’s election platform. O’Toole is campaigning across Canada during the current federal election that will see voters head to the polls on September 20.
Under the plan, the GST would not be charged for the final month of the year for in-store retailers. O'Toole said it would help Canadians who've been struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic, while also supporting businesses by encouraging consumer spending.
The Conservatives said the tax holiday would not apply to online retailers and consumer purchases. A GST holiday would represent a 5% savings on many purchases across the country.
