Kospi Hits New Peak as Tax Plan Shelved

South Korea’s Kospi index rose in early trade to a record high on Monday, marking its 10th straight session of gains, after Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol said that the government will scrap its previous plan to raise taxes on stock investments.

In Korea, the Kospi gained 11.77 points, or 0.4%, to build on Friday’s record close, to 3,407.31.

In Japan, markets were shuttered for holiday.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng recovered 58.4 points, or 0.2%, to 26,446.56.

CHINA

U.S. and Chinese officials began talks in Madrid Sunday to discuss key national security, economic, and trade issues, including the upcoming deadline to divest Chinese short video app TikTok and U.S. tariffs.

In Shanghai, the CSI 300 eked higher 11.06 points, or 0.2%, to 4,533.06.

Delegations led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with their counterparts, Chinese

Vice Premier He Lifeng and China’s top trade negotiator, Li Chenggang.

The mainland’s economy slowed in August as retail sales and industrial output missed expectations. The contraction in real estate investment worsened, slumping 12.9% in the first eight months, government data showed.

In Singapore, the Straits Times Index dropped 5.82 points, or 0.1%, to 4,338.42.

In Taiwan, the Taiex index erased 117.48 points, or 0.5%, to 25,357.16

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 slumped 11.89 points, or 0.1%, to 13,208.31.
