Asian markets began the week on a positive note, as investors bought into resource stocks such as China's Zhongjin Gold Co. as well as Australia's BHP Billiton and Woodside Petroleum on hopes that commodities prices may be supported by firm demand.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.8 percent to 3,761.0. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 0.2 percent to 26,184.0.

In Hong Kong, shares of Cathay Pacific Airways gained 0.5% and Singapore Airlines rose 0.5% in Singapore late afternoon trading, while Jet Airways stock surged 4.5% in Mumbai trading.

Shares of Angang Steel Co. gained 4% in Hong Kong, moving higher on a Financial Times report the world's largest steelmaker ArcelorMittal has held informal talks on cooperating with the steel firm to increase the latter's presence in China. ArcelorMittal is world's largest steelmaker.

Shares of Chinese department-store operator Maoye International Holdings opened above its initial public offering but then reversed course, reflecting weak sentiment toward new issues. The shares closed at HK$3.04 (39 cents), compared with its initial public offering price of HK$3.10.


Elsewhere:

Singapore's Straits Times Index advanced 0.5% to 3,250.79.

Philippines' PSE Composite gained 1.1% to 2,752.93.

Taiwan's Weighted index finished 1.4% down at 8,837.07.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index gained 0.5% to 5,730.30, on top of a 2.1% jump scored on Friday.

New Zealand's NZX 50 index rose 0.5% to 5,730.30.

Japanese and South Korean markets were closed for a holiday.
