Indian stocks closed sharply lower Friday after data showed inflation rocketed to a 13-year high, capping a bleak session for regional indices that saw banks and chip-making firms among decliners in Tokyo, while oil producers fell in the wake of the overnight fall in crude prices.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index lost 188.09 points, or 1.33 per cent, to end the week's trade at 13,942.08.

Bank Mizuho Financial Group Inc. lost 0.7 per cent and rival Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group fell 3.2 per cent. Automakers Honda Motor Co. fell 0.8 per cent, and Toyota Motor Corp. lost 1.5 per cent.

Shares of audiovisual electronics maker D&M Holdings Inc., the maker of Denon equipment, jumped 6.8% to 501 yen after a Bain Capital-led group made a takeover bid of 510 yen per share.

The Shanghai Composite Index advanced 3 per cent or 82.86 points, to 2,831.74.

Market heavyweight PetroChina, the listed unit of China's biggest oil and gas company, gained 4.6 per cent to 15.86 yuan after the government announced late Thursday that it was boosting prices for gasoline and diesel fuel by 16 per cent and 18 per cent respectively, beginning Friday.

Among other big gainers, Huaneng Power International rose by the daily 10 per cent limit, while Industrial & Commercial Bank of China rose 3.4 per cent.

In Hong Kong, the blue chip Hang Seng Index fell 52.01 points, or 0.23 per cent, to close at 22,745.6.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 1.5% to 5,288.30.

South Korea's Kospi index fell 0.6% to 1,731.00.

New Zealand's NZX-50 fell 1% to 3,307.90.

Taiwan's Weighted Price Index was down 1.8% to 7,902.44.

Singapore's Straits Times Index was up 0.3% to 3,001.81.

New Zealand's NZX-50 fell 1.7%.

Indonesia's JSX Composite fell 0.1%.
