Hong Kong bounces back


The Hong Kong index closed higher on Wednesday, recovering from recent losses, with heavyweights Tencent Holdings and China Mobile among the top performers.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 eked up 2.14 points to 16,885.33. The yen, meanwhile, traded at ¥119.10 per U.S. dollar, from ¥119.14 a day earlier.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index revived 195.85 points, or 0.8%, to 23,681.26, bouncing back after two straight days of losses.

Chinese online major Tencent Holdings was up 3.7%, as reports said WeBank, partly funded by Tencent, is on track for a trial opening later this month as the first Internet-based private bank. Telecoms giant China Mobile Ltd. rose 3.4%.

In other markets;

The Shanghai CS300 index inched up 2.73 points, or 0.1%, to 3,643.79

The Kospi in Korea nicked up 1.38 points, or 0.1%, to 1,883.83

In Taiwan, the Taiex index improved 31.75 points, or 0.4%, to 9,080.09

In Singapore, the Straits Times Index gained 16.41 points, or 0.5%, to 3,298.36

New Zealand’s NZX 50 index gave back 3.32 points, or 0.1%, to 5,558.06

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 lost 11.19 points, or 0.2%, to 5,353.61
