Markets in Asia finished the final day of the trading week mixed, but major markets in Australia, Japan, South Korea, and China all registered a weekly gain.
The Nikkei 225 dumped 229.63 points, or 1.4%, to end the week at 15,967.17. The index, however, gained 6.8% for the week.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index dropped 77.58 points, or 0.4%, to 19,285.50
The yen strengthened against the dollar with the U.S. dollar-yen pair falling 0.1% to 113.07. Earlier, the pair fell to a session low of 112.69.
Exporters, predictably, closed lower with the likes of Toyota, Nissan, and Sony seeing losses up to 2.9%. A stronger yen is a negative for exporters as it reduces their overseas profits when converted into local currency.
Earnings season continues in Asia with shares of Japan's Trend Microdropping 14.2% at market close - the biggest decline on the benchmark Nikkei index. Overnight, the security software maker announced its fourth quarter earnings result and consolidated revenue for fiscal year 2015, ending Dec. 31.
For the fiscal year from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015, the company's net income was 21.43 billion yen ($189 million U.S.), down 3.9% on-year.
In Australia, oil and gas producer Santos reported a net loss of 2.7 billion Australian dollars ($1.93 billion U.S.) for 2015 due to impairment charges of as much as A$2.8 billion.
The company's core profit before charges fell 91% to A$50 million, below an analysts' forecast of about A$94 million.
Baby formula maker Bellamy's also reported its earnings, where net profit in the six months ended December 31 was at A$13.66 million, up 325% from A$3.21 million the previous year due to growing Chinese demand.
But shares of Bellamy's fell 13.8%.
Energy plays were mostly lower across the board, with Santos shedding 4.2%, Woodside Petroleum down 2.3%, and Inpex dropping 9.4%.
CHINA
The Shanghai CSI 300 index faded 2.11 points, or 0.1%, to 3,051.59
Chinese mainland oil producers ended mostly down with China Oilfield shedding 1.3%

In Korea, the Kospi index gained 7.4 points, or 0.4%, to 1,916.24, registering a weekly gain of 4.4%
In Singapore, the Straits Times Index docked 0.7 points to 2,656.87
In Taiwan, the Taiex index added 10.37 points, or 0.1%, to 8,325.04
The NZX 50 in New Zealand moved up 30.63 points, or 0.5%, to 6,141.71.
In Australia, the ASX 200 fell 39.2 points, or 0.8%, to 4,952.80. For the week, the index was up 3.9%
