Japanese stocks bounced around on the Nikkei for a second day only to finish the day basically flat after the yen hovered near its 15-year highs.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 closed down 5.12 points, or .05%, to 9,376.48.
Toyota Motor Corp said it will recall 1.53 million vehicles globally to fix a brake-related problem that may cause fluid leaks.
Toshiba Corp announced that its first-half operating profit would likely beat its previous forecast by 49% on the back of strong sales of semiconductors and liquid crystal displays. Shares still closed down 2.19%.
Same store sales at convenience stores rose 12.9% in September representing the straight month of increases.
Cement company, Sumitomo Osaka, led gainers in the Nikkei with a rally of 5.59% to 151 yen
Central Japan Railway, Japan’s second-biggest railway company by sales, led decliners with a drop of 5.73% to 609,000 yen.
Sony Corp. rose 2.2% to 2,733 yen.
Chinese were mixed on Thursday after economic figures released by the government showed economic expansion contracted in the third quarter and the consumer price index hit a 23-month high.
The Shanghai Composite closed down 20.42 points, or .68%, to 2,983.53.
Commodities rebound -- Jiangxi Copper Co. the nation’s biggest producer of the metal, increased 2.6% to 45.23 yuan, the highest close in two months. Western Mining Co., China’s fourth-largest maker of zinc concentrate, added 2.7% to 18.16 yuan.
Banks slide -- AgriBank, the nation’s third-largest by assets, fell 3.4%. Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd., the nation’s biggest bank, slid 1.7% to 4.51 yuan. Joining in the laggard parade, China Merchants Bank Co. fell 3.8% to 15.14 yuan.
The Hang Seng rose; gaining 92.98 points to close at 23,649.48.
Elsewhere, the smaller markets were primarily down:
South Korea's Kospi gained .23% to 1,874.69.
Australia's S&P/ASX 200 closed down by .043% to 4,622.900.
India's Sensex gained 1.95%.
Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur Composite Index rose 4.24 points to 1,491.02.
Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index climbed 9.06 points.
Shenzhen Composite closed green; up .651% to 1,306.457.
Taiwan's Taiex added 6.61 points.
Singapore's Straits Times Index lost .49%.
New Zealand's NZX 50 moved up by .68%.
Philippine shares were up by 1.365%.
Shares in Thailand closed up by .070%.
