World Markets were primarily green to kick off the new trading week after the G20 meeting over the weekend. Nearly all exchanges closed up for the day with the main exception being Japan’s Nikkei, which continues to struggle with a strong yen.
Japan’s longer-maturity bonds continued to climb again on Monday as government data showed export growth slowed to lows for the year, contributing more evidence the economic recovery is slowing.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 closed down 25.55 points, or .27%, to 9,401.16.
Decliners outnumbered advancers 984 to 501, with 173 others remaining unchanged.
The air transport sector paved the way for the laggards, followed closely by the real estate and nonferrous metal sectors.
The gainers for Monday included information and telecommunication issues followed by consumer finance and mining stocks.
Shares of Toyota fell 1.12 percent, to 2,893 yen upon news that the it will revise its assumed exchange rate for the second fiscal half and is anticipating reporting 150 billion yen in exchange losses for the second half.
In China, stocks soared as commodities climbed and some solid earnings reports pushed the benchmark Shanghai index to new six month highs.
The Shanghai Composite closed up 76.38 points, or 2.57%, to 3,051.42.
Yanzhou Coal climbed to the daily 10 percent limit after reporting that net income more than tripled.
Jiangxi Copper Co. rallied as news from the G20 meeting revealed that currency intervention will remain limited, sending the dollar lower and commodities higher.
Gree Electric reached a new high for 2010, leading gains by appliance makers.
News of a cloud computing trial by the Chinese government sent shares Neusoft Corp. and other technology stocks higher for the day.
The Hang Seng rose; gaining 110.37 points to close at 23,627.91.
Elsewhere, the smaller markets had strong days on Monday.
South Korea's Kospi gained .97% to 1,915.71.
Australia's S&P/ASX 200 closed up by 1.33% to 4,710.000.
India's Sensex gained .68%.
Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur Composite Index rose .80 points to 1,491.44.
Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index climbed 45.75 points.
Shenzhen Composite closed green; up 3.002% to 1,360.621.
Taiwan's Taiex added 138.92 points.
Singapore's Straits Times Index gained .27%.
New Zealand's NZX 50 moved up by .76%.
Philippine shares were up by .887%.
Shares in Thailand closed up by .348%.
