China's Shanghai Composite Index recovered from a plunge early in the session to end in positive territory Tuesday, capping a wild day of trading that towed some of Asia's other markets along for the roller-coaster ride.

In Tokyo, Nikkei 225 index added 80.39 points, or 0.45 percent, on the Tokyo Stock Exchange to finish at 18,053.81 while in Hong Kong, the blue chip Hang Seng Index rose 112.56 points, or 0.5 percent, to 20,842.15.

Gainers included Tokyo Electron Ltd., which climbed 1.37 percent to 8,890 yen (US$72.87), Fanuc Ltd., which added 1.82 percent to 11,720 yen (US$96.07), and Daichi Sankyo Co., which rose 1.81 percent to 3,370 yen (US$27.62).

Machinery shares also rose, with Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. gaining 0.95 percent to 4,260 yen (US$34.92).

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian shares rose Tuesday as investors took cues from a recovery in China's market to accumulate stocks. The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index of 100 blue chips gained 0.7 percent to 1,369.59 points. Gainers beat decliners 665 to 208.

MANILA: Philippine shares slipped Tuesday as investors cashed in some of their gains after the market's rise to a fresh record the day before. The 30-company Philippine Stock Exchange Index dropped 14.80 pesos, or 0.4 percent, at 3,608.14, after Monday's record close at 3,622.94.

SHANGHAI: Chinese stocks rebounded in volatile trading Tuesday following their sharpest one-day drop in three months as strong buying by institutions offset selling by retail investors. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 2.6 percent to 3,767.10 after a rollercoaster session that saw the index plunge as much as 7.2 percent earlier in the day.

SINGAPORE: Singapore shares fell Tuesday on profit-taking in a number of blue chips after Monday's record close. The Straits Times Index fell 6.45 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,572.90.

TAIPEI: Taiwan shares rose slightly to a new seven-year high Tuesday, boosted mainly by gains in tech companies. The Weighted Price Index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange rose 9.2 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 8,303.99 points, the highest since July 19, 2000.

WELLINGTON: New Zealand stocks edged higher Tuesday in spite of a couple of profit downgrades, underpinned by blue chip defensive stocks like Fletcher Building and Contact Energy. The NZX-50 rose 15.7 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,312.12.
