Taiwan Jumps, Asia Mostly Higher

Shares in Asia-Pacific were mixed on Friday following an overnight bounce on Wall Street.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 jumped 219.58 points, or 0.8%, to 28,317.83.

The Japanese yen traded at 108.62 per U.S. dollar, stronger than levels above 109.2 against the greenback seen earlier this week.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng recouped 8.15points to 28,458.44. Shares of Tencent in Hong Kong dropped 3.4% on Friday, despite the Chinese tech behemoth posting a 65% surge in its quarterly profit on Thursday.

The Australian dollar changed hands at $0.774 following a recent rise from around $0.772.

In other markets

In Shanghai, the CSI 300 retreated 52.26 points, or 1%, to 5,134.15.

The Kospi index lost 5.86 points, or 0.2%, to 3,156.42

In Singapore, the Straits Times index progressed 8.08 points, or 0.3%, to 3,117.89.

In Taiwan, the Taiex index popped 259.7 points, or 1.6%, to 16,302.06

In New Zealand the NZX 50 added 22.44 points, or 0.2%, to 12,449.61

In Australia, the ASX 200 gained 10.69 points, or 0.2%, to 7,030.26.
