Asia Mixed on Christmas Eve

Shares in Asia-Pacific were mixed on Friday as some major markets in the region, including Hong Kong and Singapore, closed early for Christmas Eve.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 dropped 15.78 points, or 0.1%, to 28,782.59.

The Japanese yen traded at 114.38 per U.S. dollar, still weaker than levels below 113.5 seen earlier in the week.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng nosed ahead 30.12 points, or 0.1%, to 23,223.76.

The Australian dollar was at $0.7234, having risen from levels below $0.714 earlier this week.

In other markets

In China, the CSI 300 stepped back 27.4 points, or 0.6%, to 4,921.34

In Taiwan, the Taiex jumped 119.83 points, or 0.7%, to 17,946.66

In Singapore, the Straits Times Index inched up 11.47 points, or 0.4%, to 3,108.28

In Korea, the Kospi index advanced 14.26 points, or 0.5%, to 3,012.43

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 regained 25.7 points, or 0.2%, to 12,888.4

In Australia, the ASX 200 moved up 32.73 points, or 0.4%, at 7,420.30.
