Asia Markets Take Uniform Leap


Shares in Asia-Pacific rose in Wednesday trade, with stocks in Hong Kong leading gains regionally.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 jumped 295.35 points, or 1.1%, to 27,579.87.

Shares of SoftBank Group surged 5.9% after the Japanese conglomerate on Tuesday announced plans to take Arm public following the collapse of a planned sale of the unit to Nvidia.

The Japanese yen traded at 115.37 per U.S. dollar, having weakened from levels below 115 against the greenback earlier this week.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index replenished 500.5 points, or 2.1%, to 24,829.99, as Chinese tech stocks bounced back from their Tuesday losses. Shares of Alibaba jumped 6.8% while Tencent gained 2.7% and Netease advanced 4.9%.

Australian markets reached skyward as Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) surged 5.6%, Westpac gained 2.4%, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group advanced 1.7% while National Australia Bank rose 2.4%.

CBA on Monday announced a jump in its first-half profit and also a share buy-back worth two billion Australian dollars ($1.43 billion U.S).

The Australian dollar changed hands at $0.7156, against an earlier low of $0.7139.

In other markets

In Shanghai, the CSI 300 recovered 43.29 points, or 0.9%, to 4,652.06

In Singapore, the Straits Times index gathered 18.3 points, or 0.5%, to 3,420.04.

In Korea, the Kospi index leaped 22.38 points, or 0.8%, to 2,768.85.

In Taiwan, the Taiex index gained 185.2 points, or 1%, to 18,151.76

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 raced 114.61 points, or 0.9%, to 12,433.95.

In Australia, the ASX 200 took on 81.64 points, or 1.1%, to 7,268.33.
