Several Asian indexes advanced 3% or more on Monday, including those in Japan, China and Hong Kong, recovering some prior-week losses after the Federal Reserve reduced a key interest rate.

In Tokyo, Nikkei 225 index ended 3% higher at 15,732.48 while in Hong Kong, the blue chip Hang Seng Index 5.9% to end at 21,595.63.
Many top Japanese companies are exporters that had been receiving a critical lift from a weak yen.

Among recovering export Tokyo issues were Toyota Motor Corp., which rose 4.2 percent, and Canon, which climbed 7.6 percent. Sony Corp., another company largely dependent on exports and overseas earnings, gained 3.2 percent.


ELSEWHERE:

JAKARTA: Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index, which was among the biggest losers in the past week, climbed 6.9% to 2,039.59 in afternoon trading.

SEOUL: South Korea's Kospi added 5.7% at 1,731.27.

SHANGHAI: China's Shanghai Composite ended up 5.3% at 4,904.85.

SINGAPORE: Singapore's benchmark Straits Times Index fell 3.7 percent to close at a five-month low of 3,152.16. During the session it fell as much as 5.2 percent before paring losses.

TAIPEI: Taiwan's Weighted Index climbed 5.3% to 8,515.60.

WELLINGTON: New Zealand's NZX 50 added 2.3% to 3,982.38.

SYDNEY: Australia's S&P/ASX 200 closed up 4.6% at 5,932.60.
