Asian indexes were mostly higher Tuesday, with Hong Kong shares rebounding on strong earnings from China Mobile, while Mumbai stocks soared as investors looked for bargains after last week's heavy losses.
In Tokyo, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average closed up 0.1 percent at 16,450.58, while the broader Topix index added 0.5 percent at 1,570.55.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index ended up 3.5 percent at 29,376.86, recovering most of Monday's losses. The 43-issue Hang Seng China Enterprises Index finished up 4.4 percent at 19,636.46.
Shares of Mitsubishi UFJ rose 1.9 percent and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group advanced 2.3 percent, helped by a recovery for financial stocks in the U.S.
Hitachi rose 0.1 percent on media reports it plans to close down its personal-computer business due to stiff competition and declining shipments. Expanded global coverage.
Shares of Toyota Motor Corp. climbed 1 percent after the Nikkei business news reported that its operating profit for the fiscal first half ended Sept. 30 is expected to climb 10 percent from a year ago on strong sales in Asia and the Middle East.
Shares of Bank of Communications, or BoCom, soared 19.4 percent, narrowing the gap in valuations with the lender's Shanghai-listed shares. The gains came on hopes that HSBC Holdings, which already holds an over 18 percent stake in the lender, could further increase its holding.
Resource stocks recovered some of their losses from the previous session, with oil and gas producer Cnooc adding 5.4 percent and Angang Steel rising 4.2 percent.

MUMBAI: India's Sensitive Index rose 3.5 percent to 18,234.44 in afternoon trading, as investors looked for bargains after last week's deep losses, encouraged by the recovery in the regional markets as well as overnight gains on Wall Street.
SEOUL: South Korea's Kospi advanced 2.3 percent to 1,947.98.
SINGAPORE: The Straits Times index gained 1.1 percent to 3,682.63.
TAIPEI: Taiwan's Weighted index finished 1.5 percent higher at 9,502.39.
SYDNEY: Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 1.3 percent at 6,660.90.
