Several Asian markets came off their day's highs to end lower after a volatile session on Monday.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 average dropped 0.7 percent to 15,042.56. The broader Topix index fell 1 percent to 1,456.61.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index ended fell 0.6 percent lower at 27,460.17, declining for a third session, after hitting a high of 27,801.53 during the session. The 43-constituent Hang Seng China Enterprises Index dropped 1.2 percent to 16,535.17.
In Tokyo, shares of Mitsubishi UFJ added 1.5 percent and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group advanced 0.3 percent, helped by a higher close for U.S. stocks Friday.
But exporters such as Nintendo retreated from their day's highs as the yen rallied against major currencies. Nintendo's shares ended 3.1 percent lower, while Sony Corp. slipped 0.6 percent.
Bank of Communications declined 2.1 percent in Shanghai and 0.7 percent in Hong Kong while shares of China Merchants Bank lost 3.2 percent in Shanghai and gained 0.3 percent in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong-listed shares of China Resources ended 2.4 percent higher after the mainland conglomerate reported strong third quarter earnings, helped by gains in its retail and beverage businesses.

SEOUL: South Korea's Kospi dropped 1.7 percent at 1,893.47, after wavering between 1,892.87 and 1,936.50 during the day.
SHANGHAI: The Shanghai Composite dropped 0.9 percent to 5,269.82.
SINGAPORE: The Straits Times Index fell 0.6 percent to 3,420.93.
SYDNEY: Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 1.1 percent to 6,535.20.
TAIPEI: Taiwan's Weighted index ended 1 percent lower at 8,680.71, dropping back from its day's high at 8,838.28.
WELLINGTON: New Zealand's NZX 50 index was little changed at 4,114.67.
