Canada’s Motor Vehicle Sales Rose 13.5% In May

Motor vehicle sales in Canada during May rose 13.5% from a year ago, showing signs of a recovery heading into the busy summer sales season.

DesRosiers Automotive Consultants said May’s sales figures indicate strengthening sales following several years of disruption brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and global supply chain issues.

Motor vehicle sales in May totalled 159,705 units, up 10.9% from April of this year, according to the consulting firm.

However, while May’s sales were strong compared to this April and May 2022, they remained 21% below pre-pandemic levels.

DesRosiers said there is reason for optimism though as the Canadian economy remains resilient and has not fallen into a recession.

The firm said that on a seasonally adjusted basis, May’s motor vehicle sales in Canada totaled 1.54 million units, ending three consecutive months of declines.
