Phytochemicals May be Extremely Useful in the Fight Against the Pandemic

Phytochemicals in plant extracts may be beneficial our fight against the pandemic. In fact, according to Assistant professor Ashok Kumar, chairperson, Centre for Systems Biology and Bioinformatics (UIEAST), Panjab University, as quoted by Tribune India, “Phytochemicals are compounds that are produced by plants. They are found in fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, and other parts of plants. Some of these phytochemicals are believed to protect us from pathogenic attacks. Herbal extracts are full of phytochemicals.”

The study “successfully demonstrated the binding of phytochemicals such as sarsasapogenin, ursonic acid, curcumin, ajmalicine, novobiocin, silymarin and aranotin, piperine, gingerol, rosmarinic acid, and alpha terpinyl acetate to Nsp15 viral protein and they might play a key role in inhibiting replication,” as noted in the Sept. 2020 issue of Phytomedicine.
