Canada Admitted A Record Number Of Immigrants In 2022

Canada admitted a record 431,000 new permanent residents in 2022, the largest annual increase in the country’s history, according to data from the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

The new admissions met the 2022 target set by the federal government in Ottawa and exceeded the previous record of 401,000 immigrants set in 2021.

The Government of Canada is targeting 465,000 new permanent residents in 2023 and half a million in 2025.

Immigration accounts for nearly all of Canada's labour force growth and 75% of the nation's population growth.

During the 2021 Census, nearly one in four people counted was a landed immigrant or permanent resident in Canada, the largest proportion among Group of Seven (G7) countries.

By 2036, immigrants will represent a third (33%) of Canada's population, compared with 21% in 2011, according to government projections.
